This piece explores systems, confinement and freedom. Its theme draws on Schiller’s reflection on human fragmentation in Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man: when a person is confined to a small part of a larger whole, their role can come to define their entire sense of self.
The narrative considers two tensions: people enter systems with personal ambitions, yet are shaped to serve a specific function; the same systems demand continual growth, asking people to accelerate without offering a lasting finish line.
The “climbing game” is a metaphor for this condition: each time a goal comes within reach, a higher one is set. The piece asks how individuals can relate their ambitions, actions and freedom to a demand for growth with no end.
This piece extends the “climbing game” from individual experience to platform society. Brands present products as lifestyles; platforms turn clicks, saves, shares and purchases into data, which in turn shapes production and consumption.
Within this narrative, people are reduced to units of labour, computation and data. Systems focus on what each node can provide, while individual experience, feeling and desire recede. The “digital ghost” is a visual metaphor for this condition.
When running becomes mileage, reading becomes return on investment and travel becomes a check-in, lived experience can be judged by the same measures of growth. The piece calls this logic a “religion of data” and asks how individuals can preserve a whole sense of self when efficiency and growth become the only standards.
